I photographed a grey heron (Ardea cinerea) but forgot to change the camera settings so I accidentally used the ones from my previous photo shoot. I adjusted it and took some more shots but when I reviewed the images later, I found that I actually like this one. The (wrong) settings created a more dramatic look, and I also left it uncropped. Lesson learned: It’s good to experiment and I might make this mistake on purpose in the future. 😉

I thought Herons only ate fish, but after studying them I realized that they eat pretty much anything. “If you can swallow it, it’s edible”, seems to be their reasoning.

This little Coot is just around one week old. Since the picture was taken today, I’m guessing it’s from the second or perhaps even third litter this year.

A Song Thrush landed only a few meters away from me, and at the same time very loud “wailing” from a nearby tree started. Chicks begging for food! I had to walk away to make sure I didn’t disturb them, in worst case that could lead to the parents not daring to visit the nest and the chicks starving to death.

Where’s our Winter? We got no snow, no ice, no frost, only uninspiring grey and rain.. Here’s a picture I took one year ago, when we had a proper Winter

I waited and waited for the herons to take flight, hunt for fish, or do something – anything – fun, but alas.. They were perfectly happy to just sit still and enjoy the sun. One of them even folded its wings into an improvised deckchair, as if to make it very clear that there would be no action from their side today. Still, it was nice to watch them and get a lesson in patience
