It’s always fun to see a bird for the first time! Since I’m new at birding, this happens with fairly common birds as well. Here’s a Eurasian Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), a cute little warbler related to the Garden Warbler (see previous post).
Two collages of bird photos, taken today along the Brettenpad nature path outside Amsterdam.
First some warblers: #1 Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin), #2 Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis), #3Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus)
And here is: #1 European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), #2 European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris), #3 Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos)

Beautiful white tiger, seen at Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen
Yesterday I saw this beautiful Grey Crowned Crane at Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen-
I waited and waited for the herons to take flight, hunt for fish, or do something – anything – fun, but alas.. They were perfectly happy to just sit still and enjoy the sun. One of them even folded its wings into an improvised deckchair, as if to make it very clear that there would be no action from their side today. Still, it was nice to watch them and get a lesson in patience
I haven’t yet found the #1 on my “duck wish list” (yes, I have such a list), but supposedly there are a few Mandarin ducks in The Netherlands so hopefully I’ll be able to post some pictures of those some time in the future… In the meantime, here are some other floating birds in Amsterdam.
A European Robin singing in the Amsterdamse Bos today
I wanted to capture birds in flight. Herons are a bit slow so I thought they’d be good to practice on. I sat by the pond and waited, but the herons didn’t feel like flying, they just sat there and stared back at me. For hours. Then, just when I’d decided to give up and head back home, a little Black-headed gull came and made several sweeps around the pond. So simple, so ordinary, so cooperative. 🙂
Happy weekend everyone!
