A Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), sitting in a transmission tower in Diemerpark, Amsterdam today.
It’s not the sharpest capture, but if you scroll down you’ll understand why… π
This is why I love the SX50!

Lucky that you saw that bird

He came flying over me and then landed in the tower. Not sure I would’ve noticed him otherwise!

Perfect shot! π

We have cormorants in Macedonia too π

It was the first time I saw one here. π

Yes, yours is not sharp but definitely is a good ID.Quite the zoom, would be nice to have a camera like that. My friend has a point and shoot Nikon that zooms in better than my 70-300mm lens, much lighter in weight, less bulky, and sometimes I am envious! So does yours have a 50x zoom?
June 14, 2014 at 3:23 PM
Yes, the SX50 has 50x zoom. I have a Canon 70-300mm lens which produces higher IQ but when I go birdwatching/bird photographing I often just bring the SX50. It’s small and light, and I often use it instead of binoculars.

Good idea.I use my 70-300 as binoculars though the latter would be lighter.Maybe when the money flows i will purchase one of these zoomers.

I recommend it! Especially when you’re out walking for several hours, it’s so much easier without carrying heavy equipment.

Wow! Impressive zoom of an intriguing bird.

I can’t believe that you were able to achieve this clarity from so far away. You really are amazing!

Fairly steady hands and a super zoom! Thanks Rebecca. π

I think it is the steady hands that makes the difference!!! π

Power shots get some great looking pics. We have a different kind of Cormorant in the US. Some fisherman hate the bird. I think there are enough fish for birds and humans. Some people are so selfish and care nothing about wildlife and the environment.
June 15, 2014 at 3:21 AM
If there isn’t enough fish for everyone, it’s because of humans and not the birds.. We should share the resources!

That is a pretty amazing zoom Camilla!
June 19, 2014 at 7:57 AM
It is! I’m quite impressed, even if the quality isn’t as high as with a DSLR.

That was a long shot!!! π Interesting looking bird, I’ve not seen one like that before. Something about it’s beak and eyes remind me of a vulture, but maybe this one is a much smaller bird?
June 24, 2014 at 8:01 PM
It’s not a vulture, it’s a big seabird. They look and sound very ‘pre-historic’!
