Two pictures of frost on a window- I couldn’t decide which image I liked more so I’m posting both and also adding my first poll (see below).
The first one is a closeup with automatic focus:
The second is a macro shot with manual focus:

Although I like the glassy, crystal structures in the macro shot, the fern-like elements of the close-up shot seem to capture the essence of frost a little better for me.

Thanks for your input, Mike! 🙂 I think I agree with you.

Wow, this is stunning. The close-up could be your 2013 Christmas card – this is really beautiful. Wonderful work in capturing this photograph.

Thanks so much, Mary! 🙂 Very kind!

The second, of course. It reminds me of the structure of fractals. It’s fantastic

I think the background that you see in the first shot adds depth and color that makes the shot more interesting overall.

Thanks for your input, Janet! 🙂 I appreciate it!

Thanks so much, Niki! Very kind! 🙂

These are lovely. i voted for your macro shot. I would have voted for the closeup if it had darker background toward the center of the frame.
The closeup’s actual ice gives a dreamy quality that is wonderful.
January 23, 2013 at 3:20 PM
Thanks so much for taking your time to vote and comment, I appreciate it! 🙂 And you’re right, the closeup would’ve been better with a darker background, I should’ve waited until later in the day instead of taking it against the sun.

Ahh, I can’t decide – they are both stunning in their own way – beautiful!

I guess I voted for the more popular first one. I like the frost structure better in that one.

I like the clarity of the second (the little fractals), but the first one has more of a ‘winter atmosphere’ to it. a bit darker, maybe, and it would have been perfect – but it’s great anyways. 🙂
January 23, 2013 at 8:24 PM
Thanks so much, Eva! I agree, the background should’ve been darker! Thanks for your input 🙂
January 23, 2013 at 8:27 PM
Beautiful. I like the macro shot. It stands out against the background 🙂
January 23, 2013 at 8:58 PM
Thanks so much! 🙂

I love how they are the same subject but look so different because of the way you photographed them. Awesome!
January 23, 2013 at 11:17 PM
Thanks so much, Dolce Mela! I was a bit surprised too, they came out completely different..
January 24, 2013 at 4:00 PM
I love how lacy and fern-like the first one is! I’ll trade you some fog for some of your frost? 🙂

I love fog! It adds beauty and mystery, especially in the forest! 🙂 Happy to trade, dear friend!
January 24, 2013 at 4:01 PM
You’ve just inspired me to take some more pictures of it… 🙂
January 24, 2013 at 11:28 PM
I look forward to see them!! 😀

Most pro photographers went for the macro. Of course technically it is what it is- dull, dull, dull. I am being honest, Calee. The close-up is visually more appealing. I think some pros liked the 2nd one because it is manual focus and a full blown macro. Auto focus has a plus side, in my humble opinion.

After 30 votes, 77% has chosen #1. I guess it depends on your taste, there’s no right or wrong here. I wish #1 would’ve had a darker background and #2 more “star-like” patterns.. For almost every picture I take I have the feeling that the picture could’ve been better! Anyway, thanks Yvonne for your input, I appreciate you a lot! 🙂

Both of these are special in their own way. The colors in the first one are so intriguing, but the detail on the second one is fantastic ! Love your voting, isn’t it great to get feedback from others?
January 26, 2013 at 12:06 AM
Thanks so much, Emily! The voting was fun, I might do it again 🙂

Saw many macro shots of similar object. But the closeup is something new to me. Si this is what frost looks like (being in the tropical country, hehe) from a normal view. Thanx for sharing the beautiful images!
