ps. A tip I picked up at Etcetera Etcetera Etcetera: If you prefer to open the original post rather than the pop-up in your Reader, click the time stamp or the word count at the bottom of the Reader notice instead of the post title!

As mentioned before, I have a “duck wish list” which is a quite extensive list of ducks I want to find and photograph. And today I found #1 on that list!! A male Mandarin Duck, the most beautiful duck in the world! 🙂

Red-eared Slider turtle, on her way from the Lost Lagoon to find a good spot to dig a nest
Here she’s been digging ~30 min. It was hard to dig in the dry grass, lots of tough roots to get through
First egg on its way
You can see that the egg shell is very soft and thin, in daylight it almost glowed
After laying an egg, she gently tucked it in the hole
She laid 11 eggs in total
Then she started to fill up the hole. Note that she didn’t turn around even once during the whole time
Done! You can barely see where the nest is
Note to racoons and other threats: “No eggs here!”
She’s tired and it’s a long way back to the lagoon
One last obstacle: How to get into the lagoon
Finally! Back in the Lost Lagoon

During my visit in Vancouver, I witnessed something amazing; I followed a Red-eared slider turtle from the Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park, she walked a bit further into the park and started digging a hole. It took ~3 hours, and then she laid 11 eggs! Each one was the size of a quail egg, but they all fit in the hole. Afterwards she covered it up with dirt and grass, removing all traces of the nest. All in all, it took ~4 hours and afterwards she was quite exhausted. Here’s a picture of her walking back to the lagoon:
