Smile! The world is a beautiful place (^_^)

alcedo

A male Eurasian Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), photographed yesterday. Isn’t he beautiful! πŸ™‚ I don’t have a long zoom lens; the first picture has been cropped (he has a small fish in his beak), the second one not (you have to look for the bird in that one).

About the scientific name: Alcedo is Latin and means “kingfisher” and Atthis was the consort of Cybele in Greek mythology. Atthis was also a Phrygian god of vegetation and represented the fruits of the earth, which die in winter only to rise again in the spring.

  6. Wow, such a pretty bird!! I would love to see one of these in real life. I don’t think I’ve even seen one in flight, never mind parked on a tree. You did well to capture it, I think they’re quite zippy, fast little birds aren’t they?

    • I think they’re quite common in the UK, you just have to look in the right places πŸ˜‰ Despite its bright colors, it’s sometimes difficult to spot. They are sitting close to water so at first I usually look for an orange reflection in the water πŸ™‚ Good luck!

  7. One of my favourite birds Camilla. Brilliantly captured as I know that the only time you usually know a kingfisher is around is when you see that streak of blue to catch a fish only to disappear once more. Excellent.

    • Thanks Adrian! They’re not easy to photograph but if you’re lucky you’re at the right spot when they return with their catch (he’s got a small fish in his beak) πŸ™‚
