Smile! The world is a beautiful place (^_^)

In 1962, there was an election to vote for the national bird of Sweden. The Eurasian blackbird (Turdus merula) was pronounced as the winner, but there were suspicions that the election hadn’t been totally fair (the main concern was that most votes represented the capital, Stockholm, and not the whole country) and therefore a new vote was arranged last year. 40 bird species were nominated, and via 4 voting rounds (with voters from the whole country) a true winner would be presented. In each of the first 3 rounds, 10 birds fell out of the competition so in the final (held at the Falsterbo Bird Show) there were 10 birds remaining. And the winner was…. The Blackbird. πŸ™‚

  1. Good story! i checked it out and this bird is related to our American Robin…so I’m not surprised about its popularity. Does it have a pleasant song in the spring like its relatives???

  5. Beautiful bird, Camilla. It may not be as colorful as our Red–winged Blackbird, but its song is much more pleasant.

    • Your blackbirds look so cool, they remind me of race cars like Lightning McQueen πŸ˜‰

  6. That would not have been my choice, but I do have to honor the process…

  7. I love seeing the blackbirds in my garden Camilla and the birdsong I hear at dusk is so beautiful and reminiscent of long summer days. A worthy winner. I think the rather predictable robin won a similar vote here in the UK. My choice would have been the blackbird for the song alone!

    • I fully agree, Adrian! The song is wonderful, somehow melancholic and happy at the same time. πŸ™‚
