    • Yes, I agree, he’s Perfect! While I was photographing, a woman stopped by and asked if it was me who’d thrown a plastic duck in the water.. πŸ™‚ She’d never seen a Mandarin Duck before and was quite surprised when she noticed it was real.

    • So very beautiful! A bit shy, he kept his distance, but luckily he was still curious enough to hang around for a while.

  3. This is so cool Calee – I’ve never seen one before, fabulous with his headdress. Where was the place that you found him?

    October 20, 2013 at 3:18 PM

    • Thanks Mary! I’ve been on the hunt for over a year, traveled to places where I supposedly could find one, but never did. Ironically, I found this one in a park close to my house! πŸ˜€ Such is life!!

      October 20, 2013 at 4:18 PM

      • I doubt I’ll be photographing any birds. I only brought my new NEW-5r and it has just a 16-50. Perfect for travel.

  17. This duck reminds me of our colorful native Wood Duck. This one here might be more colorful. The pictures are wonderful.

    October 21, 2013 at 1:25 AM

    • Thanks Yvonne! You’re spot on; the mandarin duck is closely related to the wood duck. πŸ™‚

      October 21, 2013 at 4:25 PM

  18. Beautiful indeed! We have a pair (with clipped wings, brought into a downtown lake by the City) near me, and it is fascinating the way the female is so drab compared to the male.

    October 21, 2013 at 2:52 AM

    • I’ve never seen a female, but (as for all birds) they are ones who guard the nest so they must be well camouflaged. Lucky for us viewers, the male is free to show off all his glamorous colors! πŸ˜€

      October 21, 2013 at 4:30 PM

  19. Oh wow! This is awesome! Glad you found it! πŸ™‚

    October 21, 2013 at 3:41 AM

  20. P.S. Where did you find him?

    October 21, 2013 at 3:45 AM

    • In a park close to my home!! A bit ironic, since I spent quite some time looking in places much further away.. πŸ™‚

      October 21, 2013 at 4:31 PM

  21. Wow it’s so colorful, never knew such a colorful duck existed !

    October 21, 2013 at 2:52 PM

    • I’m not 100% sure, but I think this might be the most colorful duck in the world. At least, I think it’s the most beautiful one! πŸ™‚

      October 21, 2013 at 4:32 PM

  22. Amazingly colorful birds. I have never seen them before. Thanks.

    October 21, 2013 at 4:43 PM

    October 21, 2013 at 11:11 PM

  27. Congratulations, Camilla. I thought wood ducks and Hooded Mergansers were pretty spectacular, but your stunning shots are pretty convincing in supporting your claim that the Mandarin Duck is the most beautiful duck in the world. Wow.

    October 22, 2013 at 10:14 AM

    • Thanks so much, Mike! Mandarin Ducks are closely related to the Wood Ducks (also on my wish list by the way), I’m so glad I finally found one! πŸ™‚

      October 23, 2013 at 3:16 PM

  28. Love these Mandarin ducks! It feels like they are painted!

      November 1, 2013 at 6:21 PM

  34. How cool that you found it close to home. They are so over the top! We have Wood ducks here in the US, and they’re somewhat similar but not nearly that colorful. This guy just makes you wonder why…

    November 12, 2013 at 2:57 AM

    • I still can’t believe how lucky I was to finally find one of these! I’ve seen Wood ducks at a zoo once, they are beautiful but the Mandarin ducks are my favourites! SO cute πŸ™‚ Thanks for visiting!

    • You’re not the first one to think that! It looks a bit unreal! Very cute, my favorite duck πŸ™‚
